Horses For Courses

June this year saw the completion of the £3.3m project to re-develop Musselburgh Racecourse one of the country’s premier racing venues.

The 36 week project for East Lothian Council has proved challenging and our programme of works had to be both flexible and sympathetic to the client’s needs in order to minimise disruption during a busy racing season.

105 berth stables were built in a distinctive horseshoe shape forming a secure stable yard as well as a Jockey’s welfare building and outdoor activities centre.

Prior to the building phase, a substantial ground consolidation exercise was carried out utilising recycled railway ballast in forming over 900 piles, over which the concrete slab could then be installed.
As part of the external works package a “Regional” standard BMX track was also constructed, as well as access roads and car parks.

As with most modern projects the design and construction processes address sustainability issues and the use of recycled materials has been promoted where possible. The inclusion of solar panels into the roof construction adds to the overall efficiency of the buildings.

On The Buses

In October last year, work began on the redevelopment of Greenock Bus Station for SPT, with whom we are delighted to continue our relationship, having successfully completed the installation of new security bollards to all the stations on the Glasgow underground system.

The £700K Greenock project provides the Bus Station with a new eight bus stance layout and new purpose built shelters. Also as part of the upgrade, a new lighting system, improved signage and passenger information screens were installed, as well as a state of the art CCTV monitoring system.

The existing monoblock road surface was badly affected by subsidence, and had to be removed, the existing sub base then underwent a stabilisation process to minimise the risk of future settlement prior the installation of the new reinforced concrete surface.

On a project such as this within a “live environment” close liaison with the client, local authorities and the Police was essential to co- ordinate the road closures and diversions with the least impact on the operation of the bus services as possible.

Waste Not Want Not

Since the 1980’s Shanks have operated a waste management facility at Blochairn in Glasgow. The most recent addition to the operation is a new purpose built materials recycling facility (MRF).

Constructed by Luddon the £2.0M facility is designed to operate 24/7 and process 150000 tonnes of waste per year. The programme duration was 34 weeks and all works were carried out within the live operational area of the existing units. Special attention had to be given to Safety whilst also minimising impact on the client’s ongoing business.

Due to the client’s tight programme a number of time saving innovations were utilised such as pre fabricated concrete units within the sub structure which meant that certain operations were no longer weather dependent and the use of fibre reinforced concrete within the slabs saved the time usually associated with using traditional mesh panels.
